Description

'Journey of the Onset' is an experiment in storytelling and player psychology. Within this narrative project, the player is asked to find truth. At the end, the player however is told that their truth is wrong - regardless of what the player does. The project then plays with that sense of betrayal to make the player question what they're feeling when they're told they're wrong.

History

I run LARP games and one of the more fascinating things that occur is when players believe they have uncovered the truth in a plotline, only for me to tell them they're wrong. Despite that this is about a completely fictional event, players are still angry, frustrated and disappointed about this turn of events. I started seeing connections between their experience and people falling for fake news. The same anger, denial and frustration. So I looked into studies and thought it would be interesting to design an experience around deliberately invoking that feeling, and then make people question why they're feeling the way they do. By using a few psycholigical and storytelling tricks, I'm designing a storytelling experience that achieves exactly that. Of course, this is still a work in progress, but results so far have been very positive!

Features

  • A journey into a new and original setting.
  • A story filled with tension.
  • A denial of catharsis... or maybe not?
